Design Is an Act of Subtraction

Good design does not announce itself. It removes friction so quietly that the person on the other side never thinks about it at all. The weight of a well bound book, the rhythm of a page, the pause before a transition resolves, each decision either earns trust or erodes it.

Restraint is often mistaken for emptiness. In practice it is the opposite. To leave something out is to make a claim about what deserves attention, and that claim is felt even when it is never seen.

Editing as Care

The editor and the designer share a discipline. Both protect the reader from everything that does not need to be there. What remains is not less, it is clearer.
